Although the clinical trials and studies for this are still in the preliminary stage, the results look extremely promising. Here you can understand the actual process of using laser as a source of treatment to get rid of your acne.
Everything from applying greasy lotions to light therapy has been done on acne. This recent laser treatment has been successfully implemented on the back and a few more studies have actually tried removing facial acne using the same procedure.
- A 1450nm diode laser was used on a small group of 19 patients to treat their facial acne to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of using this procedure. There was a significant decrease in the number and intensity of the acne lesion present on the face. The treatment is done in steps so as to avoid high exposure and the number of steps usually depends on the spread of acne on the skin. The decrease in the lesion count after each treatment was 37%, 58% and 83% respectively at the end of three treatments. The pain associated with the procedure could be controlled by giving the patients a local anesthetic and the side effects were temporary swelling and redness on the treatment area.
- There are two studies connected with another laser called as Pulsed dye Laser. The results from this treatment procedure were not consistent.
- The first study consisted of 41 patients who had acne ranging from mild to moderate intensity and also suffered from inflammatory acne. The group was split into two parts without their knowledge. One part received the actual treatment procedure i.e. the pulsed dye laser and the second group was given a treatment which they were told was investigational therapy or a placebo. Twelve weeks later, the treatment procedure was stopped and it was noticed that the group which got the actual treatment showed a significant reduction of acne which amounted to 53% for total lesions and a 49% reduction for other inflammatory lesions. The group which got the placebo remained unaffected. A further study was suggested as it showed good results.
- In the second study a group of 40 patients were split into two groups likewise. Twelve weeks later, there was no significant difference between the two groups.
