Adult  ACNE Treatments

Acne in adults can be of various forms. Since acne is more common in teenagers and kids, it can be difficult to fid the right medication or drug for your acne if you are an adult. Most adults try and buy the general over the counter creams that are meant for oily skin. This however, can prove to be fruitless as these creams are generally meant for teenagers as there skin tends to be really oily. So, unless you have oil dripping of your skin, it is better to go in for a different medication.

Topical Treatments

The topical medication prescribed for adults include Benzoyl Peroxide, which kills the bacteria present on the epidermis and many retinoids like Adapalene, Tretinoin and Differin. These retinoids can also help reduce the wrinkles and lines on your face which will give you a younger and fresher look. The only bad thing is that they make your skin extremely sensitive to the sun and applying sunscreen when you get outside is a must. Some people have complained that it causes peeling and skin irritation; if this is the case it is better to consult your dermatologist for a better option.

Oral Medication

Topical treatments may not work for one and all. In this case you can always go in for oral medication. The most popular form of medication among oral meds is Isotretinoin which was sold by the name of Accutane before. This can be used if your acne is not being controlled by normal methods but it is specifically meant for people who suffer from severe acne like cystic acne. If all you have is an occasional breakout here and there, it is better to use creams. Your dermatologist will give you a better explanation on the kind of medication you need to use based on your skin type and the type of acne you have. Other oral meds which are used to take care of the occasional breakouts are oral antibiotics. These are used in combination with a few creams which keep acne from returning.

What Women Want

Since women face a lot of acne trouble every month, their skin requires more care than that of men. Many birth control pills and oral contraceptives are prescribed to women for their monthly cycle. These when in combination with topical treatments, help balance their hormones thus controlling the acne if not getting rid of it. Hormone replacement therapy is sometimes offered to older women who are in their post – menopause stage.
