Scarred for Life ? not Anymore
The worst part about acne, many feel, is not the pain or the itching as it heals, but actually is the ugly scar it leaves behind. Once a lesion heals, it generally leaves behind a hyper-pigmented or red mark on the surface of the skin. This is a misconception as it is not actually a scar, but is in fact a post-inflammatory change brought on by the healing of the skin. As the skin goes through the process of healing, it also remodels itself and the redness is an effect of that. The healing process should take anywhere between six to twelve months if no other lesion develops in that particular area. Coming back to the worst part, any other scar or change of color that is present after the healing time is generally permanent.
How then can one avoid getting these scars that mark you for life? By avoiding certain things and understanding the reasons for your acne, you can ensure that you do not end up with a scar. There are several types of acne treatments available for the acne caused by various sources.
As the post-inflammatory change is a part of the healing process and not a side effect, it does not harm you in any particular way. The healing process however, can be eased along the way to ensure that no scar is left behind. A number of medicines and simple practices can ease this process.
- Once the healing process starts, make sure that you stay out of the sun as much as possible. This is because; unprotected exposure to the rays of the sun can deteriorate the rate of healing by causing more skin damage. So, get a good sunscreen.
- You can also use retinoic acid or Tretinoin which helps speed up the healing and remodeling process of the skin, thus reducing the post-inflammatory marks.
- Make sure you don’t disrupt the healing process by picking at the scab formation on the wounds. Pulling on scabs can actually infect the wound even further and you will definitely end up with a scar.
Antioxidants
Antioxidants can help increase the speed of healing by releasing free radicals which fight the bacteria on the outer layer and stop their breeding. Though this has not been backed by scientific proof yet, there are a few antioxidants present in the market that can help speed up the process and leave you scar free. Consult your dermatologist for one that can help you.
